Job Summary

Job Summary: Purdue University's Department of Anthropology is seeking to fill two in-residence, tenure track Assistant Professor positions focusing on science, technology, and society (STS), to begin August 2023. The successful candidates will join a vibrant department whose Anthropologies of Tomorrow (AOT) initiative embraces publicly engaged and interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary scholarship that includes community partnerships, racial and social justice, and preparation of students for diverse and impactful careers. Purdue's Department of Anthropology is located within the College of Liberal Arts and offers B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees.

We seek two dynamic scholars with promising records of publication and funding, active research agendas, teaching and mentoring experience, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and the application of Anthropology to humanity's grand challenges. Strongest consideration will be given to scholarship that attends to issues including culture, risk, equity, justice, ethics and policy, as they intersect with Science and Technology specialties including:
  • knowledge production, innovation and/or technologies
  • environment and infrastructures
  • health, medical technologies, and well-being
  • big data, artificial intelligence and machine learning and/or cyber security

Additional Information

In addressing contemporary issues and grand challenges, Purdue Anthropologists collaborate with colleagues in Liberal Arts, and participate in numerous Research Centers at Discovery Park and beyond. Preference will be given to candidates who can contribute expertise to the Advanced Methods at Purdue program through research that utilizes cutting- edge social science research methods and tools and show an interest and ability to link to related research and education programs on campus.

Position Responsibilities

Both positions require high impact research and publications, publicly engaged work, mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, departmental service and teaching two courses per semester. The courses will be split between departmental graduate and undergraduate courses and foundational first-year courses in Cornerstone, Purdue's integrated Liberal Arts certificate program. The successful candidates will be expected to teach broad sociocultural or biocultural courses and specialty courses in STS and related areas. Our new colleagues will contribute to furthering interest in Anthropology courses and degree programs, and cross-college collaborations to engage students with broad interests. We particularly seek individuals whose research, teaching and/or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to creating diverse, equitable, and inclusive environments in the classroom, department, university, and communities.
