Campus: University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC)

Description:

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Archaeology. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter.

The University of Toronto Scarborough is implementing a new Strategic Plan: Inspiring Inclusive Excellence. Consistent with the values and objectives in that plan, we especially welcome candidates who self-identify as Indigenous or those who have lived experience in Black or other racialized (persons of colour) communities. This position is part of a cohort of similar faculty searches in Arts, Culture and Media, Biological Sciences, Health & Society, Historical & Cultural Studies, Language Studies, Management, Political Science, and Sociology. New colleagues will have the opportunity to be connected with previous cohorts of faculty from under-represented groups, including those hired last year in four departments spanning the Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities. For this important cohort hire, the University is partnering with BIPOC Executive Search. Individuals seeking more information and guidance during the application process can email Candice Frederick or Jason Murray at cfrederick@bipocsearch.com

The successful candidate must have earned a PhD in Anthropology or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching, with an emphasis on North American geoarchaeology. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths.  We seek candidates with a demonstrated commitment to ongoing field research in North America (Canada and / or the United States).  Candidates with expertise in multiple methods of analysis related to sediments, landscape geomorphology, and/or palaeoenvironmental reconstruction are strongly encouraged to apply. The candidate will join a small archaeology program at U of T Scarborough in an Anthropology department where they will help create a degree program in Archaeology and develop courses in their area of expertise that have broad appeal to undergraduate students with an interest in archaeology. This includes developing a course on North American archaeology, sharing responsibility for teaching introductory archaeology courses, and contributing to curriculum in field training. The candidate will contribute to the tri-campus Anthropology Graduate Program at the University of Toronto and as such the ability to train graduate students working in other world regions is highly desirable, as is the ability to seek collaboration with faculty in relevant disciplines beyond Anthropology. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must also be committed to the highest standard of pedagogy at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Research excellence will be demonstrated by a combination of record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, evidence of external funding, well-developed research ideas for future research as outlined in the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference. Candidates must also show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and to the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment, as demonstrated through the application materials.

Equity  and diversity are essential to academic excellence. We seek candidates who value diversity and whose research, teaching and service bear out our commitment to equity. Candidates must also show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and to the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment, as demonstrated through the application materials. Candidates are also asked to submit a 1- to 2-page statement of contributions to equity and diversity, which might cover topics such as (but not limited to): research or teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities, the development of inclusive pedagogies, or the mentoring of students from underrepresented groups. The statement should describe how the candidate’s lived experience has influenced their understanding of and commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI), the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment, as well as examples of how it is reflected in their research or teaching

The appointment is at the University of Toronto Scarborough, which is a research-intensive campus with a commitment to interdisciplinary research, a multicultural student body, and a modern campus. The University offers the opportunity to conduct research, teach, and live in one of the most diverse cities of the world. The successful candidate will be a member of the tri-campus Graduate Department of Anthropology. The Department of Anthropology at U of T Scarborough includes faculty members with interests in archaeology, socio-cultural, linguistic and evolutionary Anthropology.  For more information about our department, please visit our home page: www.utsc.utoronto.ca/anthropology.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Applicants must provide the name and contact information of three references.
