Associate /Full Professor and Director of Research Laboratories of Archaeology

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for an Associate or Full Professor to serve as the Director of the Research Laboratories of Archaeology (RLA) and Chair of the Curriculum in Archaeology. In their dual role as Director and Chair, the successful candidate will oversee the RLA’s research, curatorial, education, and public outreach activities and coordinate the interdisciplinary undergraduate major and minor in archaeology. The successful candidate will have a tenured appointment in the Department of Anthropology.

We seek an archaeologist whose research focuses on the Indian communities of the American South. Applicants should have a solid record of research including field work; museum experience, digital expertise, or lab skills that complement the candidate's research strengths will be considered an asset. Applicants should also have a strong record of scholarly publication, teaching and service; proven leadership and administrative skills; and the ability to work effectively with diverse communities and individuals, particularly Native ones.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Anthropology or a related discipline and should demonstrate the potential for excellence in research and a commitment to teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. About the Research Laboratories of Archaeology and Curriculum in Archaeology

The Research Laboratories of Archaeology (RLA) is an independent unit within the College of Arts and Sciences that houses the Curriculum in Archaeology and has close ties with the Departments of Anthropology, Classics, and American Studies, as well as with other programs such as the Center for the Study of the American South and the American Indian Center. Founded in 1939, the RLA was the first center for the study of North Carolina archaeology. Serving the interests of students, scholars, and the general public, it is currently one of the leading institutes for archaeological research and teaching in the South. On the UNC campus, it provides support for faculty and students working not only in North Carolina, but also throughout the Americas and overseas. The RLA’s archaeological collections include more than 8 million artifacts from 10,000 archaeological sites (mostly in North Carolina and nearby states), as well as over 60,000 slides, negatives, and photographs.

The Curriculum in Archaeology, founded in 2008, brings together faculty from five departments in the College of Arts and Sciences to offer undergraduates both a major and a minor in archaeology. It also serves as a forum for collaboration among archaeologists by sponsoring lectures, workshops, and other events.  The units currently represented in the Curriculum are Anthropology, Classics, Linguistics, Religious Studies, and the RLA.
