Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, health care and service, is seeking applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor position in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, to begin in Fall 2023. This search is part of a departmental cluster hire initiative around health, race, and the environment. We are seeking a sociocultural, medical, or biological anthropologist with expertise in race/racism and health/medicine, in any region of the world. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is strongly committed to SLU’s Mission for Faculty Diversity and Excellence and to establishing a more diverse faculty. Our new colleague will contribute to our department’s commitments to support the success of students from historically marginalized economic, social, and cultural groups.

Duties include teaching courses in the candidate’s thematic and regional areas of expertise, such as medical or biological anthropology, and the anthropology of race and racism. Candidates should be able to teach introductory and other service courses in anthropology and will have the opportunity to develop new courses in their areas of expertise in the newly established university Core. Candidates are expected to participate in service and maintain an active program of published research. Research-active faculty in our department teach two courses each semester.

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent degree for appointment. The successful candidate will demonstrate scholarly achievement and promise, dedication to graduate and undergraduate teaching and mentorship, a commitment to service at the department, college, and university levels, and a willingness to contribute to the continued development of a methodologically diverse and collaborative department. Regardless of their own religious affiliation, the successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to the University’s Catholic and Jesuit mission, which affirms the importance of diversity and fosters an inclusive work environment (https://www.slu.edu/about/catholic-jesuit-identity/mission.php).

All applications must be made online at https://slu.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/Careers; applications must include curriculum vitae and cover letter. Candidates that are selected for a campus interview will be asked for three letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin October 21, 2022, and will continue until the position is filled.

Vaccine Protocol: Saint Louis University will require COVID-19 vaccinations for all students, staff, and faculty who are physically present on our St. Louis campuses. As a prospective and/or a new employee at Saint Louis University, you will be required to comply with the University’s vaccination protocol. If you are not vaccinated, you will be required to begin the vaccination process at the time of your first day of employment.
