Tenure-Track Positions :
For all tenure-track positions, a terminal degree in the respective field is required at the time appointment begins. Duties for tenure eligible positions include research and teaching in the respective field, as well as service to the university. Our scholar-teacher model values faculty research, classroom, instruction, and student-faculty interaction, within a strong liberal arts tradition comprising several dozen academic disciplines.

The Department of Anthropology at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia founded in 1693 that is located on lands originally inhabited by ancestors of the Cheroenhaka (Nottoway), Chickahominy, Eastern Chickahominy, Mattaponi, Monacan, Nansemond, Nottoway, Pamunkey, Patawomeck, Upper Mattaponi, and Rappahannock tribes, seeks applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Native Studies. William & Mary's Native Studies program is an interdisciplinary minor housed in the Department of Anthropology that interfaces with Linguistics, Hispanic Studies, Latin American Studies, American Studies, Asian and Pacific Islander American Studies, Africana Studies, History, Sociology, Art and Art History, the Muscarelle Museum, and the Institute for Integrative Conservation. While the Native Studies program is recently established within the context of wider diversity initiatives on campus, it is embedded in a long and complex history of relationships between William & Mary and Indigenous communities, ranging from the Brafferton Indian School built in 1723 to today's American Indian Resource Center that partners with descendant communities and tribal members in Virginia and beyond. We seek a candidate with an active research program centered on Indigenous communities in the Americas to join a four-field department with a longstanding commitment to Native Studies and historical anthropology. We welcome applicants working on a range of topics, including but not limited to language revitalization and reclamation, sovereignty, health, gender and sexuality, political economy, interculturality, visual and expressive culture, social movements, Indigenous epistemologies and ontologies, environmental governance, and education. The department is interested in the theoretical, comparative, methodological, and applied and/or restorative dimensions of the candidate's engagement with Indigenous communities. The Department of Art and Art History and the Africana Studies Program at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seek applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in African Art History and Film. Appointment will begin August 10, 2023. We are interested in individuals with research and teaching expertise in African Art History and Africana Film. This position is crucial to Art History's global perspective and will also contribute a key discipline to Africana Studies. We are interested in individuals whose work has a strong historical background in continental Africa but are also open to candidates who bring that perspective to a range of periods and geographies. Additional preferred expertise includes West African art and the African art diaspora, museum studies, as well as issues surrounding colonialization, repatriation, and cultural heritage. The preferred candidate will also show a dedication to the liberal arts model of higher education. Duties include research, teaching, and service to the University. The applicant is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant research program that includes publications, participation in national and international conferences, external grants, and other scholarly activity that inspires a highly motivated undergraduate student body. Teaching expectation is 2 courses per semester; 3 courses per year for Art and Art History, 1 course per year for Africana Studies. The successful applicant must possess the skills to teach compelling courses in African Art History and Film to contribute specifically to Art History's new tracks in Critical Curatorial Studies and Built Environment Studies, and to develop and teach courses for the new COLL 350 component of the Arts and Sciences curriculum, which focuses on "difference, equity, (and) justice." Preferred candidates will have teaching experience from larger lecture to smaller seminar-style courses. Special consideration will go to scholars who can also teach Introduction to African Studies for the Africana Studies program.
