The Department of History in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences and School of Education in the College of Applied Human Sciences at West Virginia University invites applications for a Service Assistant Professor of Social Studies/Secondary Education starting August 11, 2023. This is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure track position with full benefits. This is a dual appointment position in the Department of History and the School of Education. Service Assistant Professor appointments have renewable terms of up to three years, with no limit on the number of terms. Service Assistant Professors are eligible for promotion, e.g., Service Assistant Professor to Service Associate Professor and Service Professor; however, promotion to senior ranks is not a requirement for institutional commitment and career stability.

As a dual appointment, the successful candidate will hold 50% of their responsibilities in the Department of History, advising undergraduate students in the Social Studies/Secondary Education BA program and coordinating that program; and 50% of their responsibilities in the School of Education where they will teach two courses per semester (40%) and complete 10% of service expectations. The successful candidate will be expected to advise students, collaborate with colleagues, and teach classes that complement the School of Education's current offerings at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The History Department and the School of Education collaborate to oversee the dynamic coursework and training of students in the Social Studies/Secondary Education program. The History Department advises both History and Social Studies/Secondary Education majors. The Social Studies/Secondary Education major (details here) prepares WVU students for the crucial task of shaping the next generation of engaged citizens and critical thinkers. Our majors explore an interdisciplinary curriculum that bridges History, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Anthropology and Sociology. They also train in pedagogy and methods in their professional education courses and gain hands-on experience in public school classrooms. Students develop and learn how to teach essential skills including critical thinking, effective communication, and global perspectives.

WVU is a R1 research land grant university located within 90 minutes of Pittsburgh and 3.5 hours from the Washington/Baltimore area. Morgantown has been recognized as one of the most livable small cities in the U.S. There are extensive recreational opportunities, excellent public schools, and a supportive University environment in which to develop a visible and productive career. The WVU Dual Career Program is available to assist candidates with suitable employment opportunities for spouses or partners.

The successful candidate will coordinate the Social Studies/Secondary Education BA program and will contribute to the training of future Social Studies teachers at WVU. The successful candidate 1) must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Social Studies Education at the time of appointment; 2) must have at least three years of demonstrated experience teaching in K-12 classrooms; 3) a background in Social Studies Education or a closely related field; 4) must demonstrate a knowledge of contemporary issues in curriculum and teaching; 5) demonstrated knowledge of curriculum development; 6) show ability to successfully teach Social Studies methods or related courses in higher education; 7) show ability to successfully mentor and advise undergraduate students; 8) show a commitment to developing partnerships with K-12 schools. Candidates holding teacher certification, and with experience collecting data and writing reports for CAEP accreditation are encouraged to apply.

To apply, please upload the following documents: CV, Application Letter, and List of References with complete contact information. Those candidates invited for on campus interviews may be asked for further materials at a later date.

The screening process will begin October 17, 2022 and continue until the position is filled.
