The Department of Anthropology and the Africana Studies Program at Franklin & Marshall College invite applications for a tenure-track position in Cultural Anthropology, beginning Fall 2023. Applicants should possess or be close to completing a doctoral degree in Anthropology. The rank will be Assistant Professor or Instructor depending on qualifications.

We seek a colleague who does not duplicate our present departmental interests and whose ethnographic research centers Africa and/or the African Diaspora. We especially welcome applications from scholars whose work engages critical perspectives on race and racialization, racial prejudice and anti-Blackness, decolonial and anticolonial methodology, and/or Black emancipatory politics. Applicants’ scholarship should be informed by long-term ethnographic fieldwork.

We are interested in candidates who are dedicated to excellent teaching and committed to teaching students with diverse backgrounds, academic interests, and learning styles. The successful candidate will teach courses in their area of expertise and contribute to a rotation of core courses in the Anthropology major. These include, but are not limited to, our introductory anthropology course, our senior level ethnographic methods course, and our anthropological theory course.

The successful candidate will be housed in the Anthropology Department but will be expected to contribute cross-listed courses that support the Africana Studies Program. The teaching load is 3/2, which includes contributions to the college’s general education program. Faculty at Franklin & Marshall maintain active research programs and contribute to the College’s shared governance.

Candidates must submit the following items electronically via Interfolio at  http://apply.interfolio.com/112952

    Teaching evaluations

The names and contact information for three references (NOTE: letters of reference will be solicited at a later stage, and once they are solicited referees will need to supply them within three weeks)

For full consideration applications should be received by 11:59 pm EST, November 1, 2022.

Pursuant to cultivating an inclusive college community, the search committee will holistically assess the qualifications of each applicant.  We will consider an individual’s record working with students and colleagues with diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds.  We will also consider experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to academic success.
