The faculty of the Department of Anthropology at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invite applications for a biological anthropologist. This is a 9-month, full time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 16, 2023.
Geographic area of research is open. Candidates who study health, demography, the developmental origins of human disease, epidemiology, growth and development, or nutrition in living or recent (c. 19th-20th centuries) historical populations and whose research and teaching complements that of existing faculty in the Department are especially encouraged to apply. We are interested in scholars who focus on the biological mechanisms underlying: 1) the developmental origins of health and disease, and/or 2) health disparities in and across living populations. We are particularly interested in scholars who will complement departmental strengths in medical anthropology and the bioarchaeology of human health and health disparities, expand departmental offerings relevant to the Department’s new Minor in Medical Anthropology, as well as build on university-wide strengths in global health and the College’s Minor in Medical Humanities. Applicants must have and maintain an active program of research and demonstrate potential for securing extramural funding. Candidates will be expected to teach large introductory undergraduate courses, and courses in their area of specialization, advise undergraduate majors and mentor graduate students, and participate in service activities. A typical teaching load in our Department is two courses per semester. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Anthropology or a related field by the time of appointment (ABDs will be considered at the time of application).
