Position Summary:The Department of Anthropology and Geography at the University of Alaska Anchorage invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Anthropology with a specialty in bioarcheology. The Department, which maintains a Northern focus, offers baccalaureate degrees in Anthropology (B.A., B.S., and a minor), a minor in Cultural and Natural Resources Management, and a Master's degree in Applied Anthropology with two emphases (applied cultural anthropology and cultural resource management). We maintain facilities dedicated to anthropological scholarship, including three archaeological processing labs, a GIS computer lab, a cultural anthropology lab, a bioarcheology lab, and a repository for faunal collections of Alaska Consortium of Zooarchaeologists. We seek a collegial individual who will complement our faculty's interests, support our undergraduate programs, and work to grow our graduate program. Scholars with research focus outside of Alaska are welcome to apply with the willingness to expand their programs to include the North.
Duties:
100 Engage in course development and instruction: Responsible for developing and teaching courses in a manner consistent with the specific course content descriptions; developing and modifying curriculum and teaching modalities; engaging in student learning and curricular assessment activities, and holding office hours appropriate for the courses being taught. Courses will include introductory courses in general anthropology, biological anthropology, human evolution, and Alaska Native cultures as well as upper-division courses in human osteology, human variation, and analytical techniques in bioarchaeology. Additional courses will depend on the applicant's expertise. Candidate will teach and work with diverse populations. Mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Chairing and serving as member of research graduate advisory committees. Guiding and advising undergraduate students on independent research. Providing academic advising and mentoring. Develop and maintain an independent research program in bioarchaeology in Alaska: Research efforts should include undergraduate and graduate students, pursue external funding to support the program, including contracts for applied work, foster community and stakeholder collaboration and participation, and publish results in peer-reviewed publications or produce refereed reports for agencies/organizations. Actively participate in service activities: Serving on department, college, and university committees; and providing professional and public service to the department, college, university, and community. - Ability to develop and teach online and distance-delivered courses.
- Potential to establish an independent research program that will build on and add to existing research in the department.
- Knowledge of contemporary curricular content for biological anthropology.
- Ability to establish connections within and outside the university.
- Ability to represent the department in the University.
- Advanced graduate-level training in bioarcheology and human osteology.
- Experience in field archaeology.
- Experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
- Ability to work with a diverse student population.
Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of the Alaska context, Alaska Native people, and Alaska communities.
Experience designing and conducting collaborative projects with local and/or Indigenous communities.
College-level teaching experience both online and in the classroom.
Experience with implementing NAGPRA.
Experience working with Native communities in Alaska.
Typical Experience:
Length of time and type of experience required for this position should be appropriate to the rank of tenure-track assistant or associate professor. All applicants must have university-level teaching experience.
Applicants considered for the assistant rank should have a record of research and peer-reviewed publications or demonstrated potential for peer-reviewed publications.
Applicants considered for the associate rank should have extensive college-level teaching experience in general Anthropology, Biological Anthropology, and Osteology and must have an established record of peer-reviewed publication, a previous tenured appointment at an institution, and research experience in Alaska.
Required Education or Training:
PhD in Anthropology with an emphasis in biological anthropology. ABDs will be considered for the assistant rank but employment is contingent on conferral of degree by time of hire in August 2023.
