Assistant Professor of Anthropology

LEHIGH UNIVERSITY. The Department of Sociology & Anthropology, the Center for Global Islamic Studies, and the Asian Studies Program invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position as Assistant Professor of Anthropology, effective Fall 2023. Candidates for this position will work within or across any of anthropology’s subfields (Archaeology, Biological Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, or Linguistics) and must have a primary research focus on Muslim communities of Southeast Asia. To be considered, candidates are required to have at least one scholarly work accepted for publication or have secured extra-institutional research funding. Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in anthropology or a subfield of anthropology by the effective starting date of employment.

The successful candidate will hold an appointment in the Department of Sociology & Anthropology (socanthro.cas.lehigh.edu) and affiliations with the Center for Global Islamic Studies (cgis.cas.lehigh.edu), and the Asian Studies Program (asia.cas.lehigh.edu).  They will be expected to maintain a vigorous research program, and to teach introductory anthropology courses as well as courses cross-listed with Asian Studies, such as Peoples and Cultures of Muslim Southeast Asia. Teaching responsibilities will also include advanced courses in their area of interest. The standard teaching load is 2/2.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers undergraduate majors in anthropology and sociology and encourages student involvement in independent or supervised research. Department faculty members include 5 anthropologists and 9 sociologists, all of whom are active researchers, dedicated teachers and collaborators in a variety of interdisciplinary academic programs. Asian Studies is one such program, which brings together 7 faculty members across 4 disciplines, and offers an undergraduate major and minor. The Center for Global Islamic Studies is an interdisciplinary research center which has organized multiple international conferences and published two edited volumes: Beautiful Behavior: Piety, Politics and Everyday Ethics in Southeast Asian Islam (2019) and Cyber Muslims: Mapping Islamic Digital Media in the Internet Age (2022).
