Job Summary
The Natural History Museum of Utah is starting an exciting new initiative to digitize 350,000 natural history specimens, artifacts, and records. Our goal is to digitize the anthropology department's archaeological records and specimens including historic paper documents, maps, photographic negatives and prints, colored slides, points, tools, and more. The imagery and associated metadata will be stored and managed in the NHMU database.
As part of our initiative, we are seeking a digitization technician. As a digitization technician, you will be an important member of the team working towards preserving records in perpetuity for access by researchers around the world. This position is responsible for scanning archaeological oversized maps and documents. They will assist in entering imagery and metadata into the collections management database. The technician will collaborate with the Anthropology Records Manager and the Digitization Coordinator. Responsibilities
· Scanning large format maps and documents
· Entering images and metadata into the NHMU database
· Keep clear records of all work done regarding the imaging project
· Ensuring that work is error free and completed accurately
· Handling fragile and scientifically valuable records and artifacts with extreme care
Minimum Qualifications
Preferences
· Has an interest in a library or museum career. · Understands the culturally sensitive nature of archaeological records and the need to protect archaeological sites.
· Able to commit to the academic year (fall and spring semesters)
· Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team
· Have incredible attention to detail and is highly organized
· Ability to problem-solve (troubleshoot) independently. However, you have a professional ability to communicate, and ask directed questions to ensure that the job is being completed efficiently and appropriately.
· Willing and able to complete repetitive, yet detail-oriented tasks
· Ability to work in various computer programs (especially Microsoft and Adobe Suite), easily learn new programs, and operate scanning hardware.
