Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Biological Anthropology

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at James Madison University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Biological Anthropology at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2023. We seek applicants that have expertise in human biology, human evolution, or human variation. Applicants who focus on nutrition, biodemography, genetics, energetics, infectious disease, or health disparities from a developmental and life history perspective are especially encouraged to apply.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology consists of 23 full-time faculty, 13 in Sociology and 10 in Anthropology. The Anthropology program is committed to four-field undergraduate teaching. The faculty are active in professional fields at the national and international level and are dedicated to excellence in undergraduate education.

The College of Arts and Letters, in which the Department of Sociology and Anthropology is located, enrolls over 3400 undergraduate majors and about 150 graduate students across ten academic units in the humanities, social sciences, and communication studies.  Home to several interdisciplinary centers and institutes, the College employs 270 full-time faculty.  It is a university leader in student and faculty diversity and belonging and has made significant faculty investments in racial and social justice, Latinx studies, and African-American studies. It embraces the teacher-scholar model, supporting excellent teaching, innovative service, and strong programs of research and creative inquiry across the disciplines. Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching duties include an introductory course in biological anthropology, upper-level courses in the candidate’s area(s) of specialization, and a course on research design and methods.


A Ph.D. by time of appointment is preferred. We are especially interested in candidates who have a demonstrated commitment towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. Candidates must demonstrate their potential to teach in both small and large classroom settings.
