The Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) is located 12 miles west of the OHSU main campus, and sits on 162 acres of land featuring forested areas, research and administration buildings, indoor and outdoor animal housing, a pond, and 2-mile perimeter walking path. Our mission is to improve human health and the quality of life through the support of nonhuman primate research programs that advance our knowledge of the causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of debilitating diseases.
The Senior Research Assistant will contribute to the design and implementation of research devoted to psychological well-being of research animals, including assessing and improving psychological well-being methods; data collection, entry, and analysis; responsible for specific phases of research projects; assist with implementation of behavioral management plan; communicate with other units to identify and assess NHP to be selected for assignment. Supervise formation and monitoring of pairs and groups of nonhuman primates (NHPs), perform behavioral assessments on caged NHPs; assist with program to utilize Operant Conditioning to train NHPs to cooperate with husbandry and research procedures; participate in training new and visiting staff; review literature and regulatory sources to evaluate and recommend implementation of psychological well-being plans and protocols.
- Bachelor's in relevant field AND 1 year of relevant experience OR Equivalent combination of training and experience
- Coursework in Biology, Zoology, Psychology, or Anthropology
- 1 year experience in a research setting
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate positively and effectively, in oral and written formats, with research, administrative, and support staff regarding the needs and goals of the program
- Ability to interact with NHPs in a calm, respectful manner
- Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions, use basic computer programs (including spreadsheets and graphics programs)
- Ability to think strategically and work accordingly, producing effective results and working efficiently within the time constraints of the position
- Work independently and in group setting
- ability to prioritize work demands, and coordinate BSU programs with other staff and departments
- Perform work in areas where there is a potential risk of exposure to zoonotic agents through injury, by direct contact with animals or their tissues and body fluids, or by contact with equipment contaminated by animals or their tissues and body fluids
- Work may be performed in animal housing areas that are not climate controlled and may have wet and/or slippery surfaces
- Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 12 kg
- Fine motor skills to operate hand/power tools
- Able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
- Master's degree
- 1 year experience working with NHP
- Proficient in Microsoft suite and statistical programs
- LAT, LATG, or CVT
