The Department of Anthropology in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the Archaeology of the African Diaspora. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, and it will be a joint appointment, with 75% of the position in the Department of Anthropology and 25% of the position in either Centre for Caribbean Studies, or Victoria College dependent on the successful hire's area of expertise. The expected start date is July 1, 2023.
Applicants must have earned a PhD in Anthropology or Archaeology by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, and have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. Areas of expertise may include: plantation societies, or other enslavement contexts, in the Caribbean or North America; maroon societies; the material culture of enslavement and/or post-emancipation life; more historically recent African diasporic communities; Caribbean Studies; and community-engaged archaeology. We especially welcome applications from individuals who prioritize the diversification of the field of archaeology through their teaching, research, and background; and/or have lived experience related to the African diaspora.
The successful candidate will join two vibrant intellectual communities. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance existing strengths in the participating units. Applicants are encouraged to review the faculty research and academic programs in the Department of Anthropology, the Centre for Caribbean Studies and Victoria College, Material Culture and Semiotics. Applicants may also want to learn more about University of Toronto’s dynamic Archaeology Centre. Candidates will be expected to lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
Excellence in research will be demonstrated through published or forthcoming papers in top-ranked and field-relevant academic journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, invited lectures, research grants, accolades, or awards, and strong endorsements by referees of high stature.
Evidence for excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching awards and accomplishments appropriate to applicant’s stage of career, strong letters of reference, and a teaching dossier that includes a teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations.
Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment through the application materials.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
