JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Department of Anthropology (https://anth.la.psu.edu/) in the College of the Liberal Arts (https://la.psu.edu) is seeking a Research Technologist 3. This position is responsible for performing and directing the performance of a wide variety of specialized tasks in Professor Joan Richtsmeier's Image Analysis and Morphometrics Lab.
The key duties for this position include:
- Responsible for the day-to-day management, breeding, and observation of our mouse colony housed at the Millennium Science Center and associated data management
- Overseeing the operation of a sample preparation facility housed in the Department of Anthropology
- Performing laboratory experiments to prepare mouse samples for genotyping, other biochemical assays, and imaging
- Processing histological images for analysis and preparing summary reports of ongoing projects and data
- Maintaining data management of mouse breeding, mouse genotyping, and associated histology and staining
This person will also be involved in oversight and training of students and wage employees in mouse care, sample preparation, and data management systems. These duties require specific training.
Additional Information: Full Penn State benefits (https://hr.psu.edu/2022-benefits) included. This is a limited-term appointment, funded for one year from date of hire, with excellent possibility of re-funding.
Education and Experience: This position typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher (a Master's degree is preferred) plus seven years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A degree in Anthropology, Geology, or Chemistry or related field is also preferred.
It is desirable for candidates to have a minimum of 6 years of experience in a wet lab setting and be familiar with chemistry lab safety and waste disposal procedures, practical lab skills in wet chemistry and the use of centrifuges and other basic laboratory equipment.
Demonstrated knowledge of histological sectioning is also required. A working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel is also necessary, and a conceptual knowledge of chemistry, biology, and/or physics is desirable.
