The industry leading National Geographic History magazine is beloved by readers and history buffs all over the world. Our mission: to tell the most compelling stories about "The Past and All That Is In It" through a combination of stunning visuals and dynamic storytelling-the calling card of the National Geographic brand.
History magazine is committed to great storytelling-through strong writing, accuracy, and proper tone, and the way we get there is through strong quality control. The Copy Editor is a key part of that process and makes sure that History magazine's content stays true to its brand. Copy Editor will improve the text's clarity, logic and flow; checking the facts; insuring the tone is appropriate; and applying NG Style.
Responsibilities :
- Prepare released files for proofreading stage for each issue of History magazine. Work in files using Adobe InDesign
- Text edit: Edit all text at a paragraph and sentence level, including narrative, sidebars, and captions, for flow, consistency, logic, sensitivity, and accuracy.
- Copy edit:
- Correct spelling, grammar, usage, and punctuation throughout the entire issue including Cover, Masthead, frontmatter, departments, and features.
- Apply NGS Style using House Style Guide
- Prepare a Style Sheet for each issue for use later quality control stages.
- Fact check and research:
- Using sources provided by authors, fact check all text in departments and features including: titles, decks, captions, sidebars, and narratives.
- Provide detailed and professional sources to support changes and corrections (i.e. No Wikipedia or other dubious internet sources)
- Query editor with issues that cannot be resolved by the line editor.
Basic Qualifications :
- Specialization in history, art history, archaeology, or anthropology preferred.
- Must have a love of history and be curious about the subject matter.
- Minimum of 10 years copy editing experience and 5 years fact checking skills
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Familiarity with software used in editorial work (MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite)
- Must exercise good judgment in the delivery of historical stories, some of which are about sensitive and/or challenging topics. Must be able to call out problems in text with sensitivity, appropriateness, and/or bias
- Organization skills, ability to work flexibly and independently.
- Ability to work on tight deadlines
Required Education :
- Bachelor's degree required
Additional Information :
This role is considered hybrid, which means the employee will work a portion of their time on-site from a Company designated location and the remainder of their time remotely. A remote opportunity may be possible for qualified candidates under certain circumstances and, if granted, the employee would work remotely on an ongoing basis.
