Summary:
The Department of Anthropology invites applications for a one-year, non-tenure track Visiting Assistant Professor position in archaeology/biological anthropology for the 2022-2023 academic year. Geographic area and specialization are open, but candidates are expected to teach introductory courses in both archaeology and biological anthropology. In letters of application, candidates should discuss their interest in developing as a teacher in an undergraduate liberal arts university that emphasizes close student-faculty interaction. They should also discuss their potential to contribute to a university community that maintains a diversity of people and perspectives as one of its core values.
We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates from underrepresented groups, and from candidates who have interest and/or experience in working with diverse student and community populations.
Required Qualifications and Education:
- Experience in, demonstrated understanding of, or interest in social justice education and/or initiatives, and/or inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.
- PhD in Anthropology from an accredited institution completed by the start of the Fall 2022 semester
- Experience teaching archaeology and biological anthropology to undergraduates
Preferred Qualifications and Education:
- Applications reflecting expertise in new techniques and technologies will receive special consideration.
Responsibilities:
- Visiting Assistant Professor will teach four courses in the fall semester and four courses in the winter semester for the AY 2022-2023. Possible introductory courses include Origins of Civilization, Human Origins, and Introduction to Archaeology.

Department/College: The Anthropology Department (www.gvsu.edu/anthropology) consists of ten full-time faculty and several part-time instructors with a commitment to excellent undergraduate teaching and research. This four-field department offers both an anthropology major (BA and BS) and minor, while also contributing substantially to the General Education Program, teaching four Foundation Courses, nine Theme Courses, ten World Perspectives courses and two U.S. Diversity courses. The Anthropology Department is part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
