Position Summary:The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Anthropology invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology. This recruitment is open internally to current UA employees or those otherwise eligible to apply to internal postings.
Duties:
10% Service - Fulfill various service obligations at the department, college, university, professional and public levels. Essential
30% Research/Creative Activity - Continue established, interdisciplinary research agenda preferably focused on food systems and practices in the Circumpolar North (e.g., Alaska,, Russia Far East, Beringia). Develop collaborations with communities across the Circumpolar North, publish articles, and present research and processes to diverse audiences. Essential
60% Teaching - Teaching duties include teaching lower and upper division/graduate courses in Anthropology and Cultural Anthropology. Recruit, advise undergraduate students, mentor and supervise graduate students, and support students. Hold office hours appropriate for the courses being taught. The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Anthropology invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology. Candidates shall demonstrate excellence in teaching and mentoring. Teaching duties include lower and upper division anthropology and cultural anthropology courses as well as course development at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The successful candidate must hold office hours appropriate for the courses being taught and develop and modify curriculum towards in-person and/or distance delivery and other teaching modalities as needed.
Typical experience for applicants is experience teaching at the university level; experience mentoring and supporting undergraduate and graduate students; experience teaching and conducting research within a context of interdisciplinarity; experience applying for and managing grant funding; and experience successfully developing community-academic collaborations (particularly with Indigenous communities).
PhD in Anthropology with a specialization in cultural anthropology at time of appointment required. Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses is also required. Expertise in circumpolar/northern environments and topics, preferably food systems and practices. Preference given to applicants with broad theoretical knowledge of the discipline and subdiscipline, successful teaching experience, established record of research and grants management, established record of collaboration with northern communities, and regional and topical specialization that complements the department's strengths.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities sought are strong interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to teach a variety of courses in anthropology and cultural anthropology using diverse formats and platforms including in-person, hybrid, remote, and team-teaching; and the ability to develop interdisciplinary collaborations and mutually beneficial community-academic partnerships.
