HELIX Environmental Planning, Inc. (HELIX), a growing, employee-owned environmental consulting firm, is seeking an experienced, highly motivated Cultural Resources Discipline Leader to join our California Cultural Resources management team. Cultural Resources Discipline Leader

The statewide Cultural Resources Discipline Leader will be a senior member of the HELIX team, reporting to the CEO. This position includes developing business opportunities, working with the Cultural Resources Group Managers to ensure the quality and consistency of technical approaches across offices, assisting in the recruitment of cultural resources staff, facilitating sharing of employee resources, and identifying employee development opportunities within the cultural resources teams. Additionally, this position will work with HELIX's leadership team in development and implementation of strategic planning goals as well as supporting interdisciplinary coordination, business development, and project management efforts. The ideal candidate must possess strong project management and leadership skills, with the proven ability to complete projects within time and budget constraints. They will have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong, collaborative relationships among team members, staff, clients, and agencies.

General scope of responsibilities for Cultural Resources Discipline Leader:
  • Companywide Business Development. Take the lead in finding and developing business opportunities for HELIX's cultural resources practice, including prehistoric and historic archaeology, architectural history, and Native American consultation.
  • Ensure Quality and Consistency of Technical Approaches Across Offices. Ensure consistency across HELIX offices in our cultural resources data collection, analysis, mitigation, and documentation.
  • Facilitate Sharing of Employee Resources. Assist the Cultural Resources Group Managers to facilitate sharing of employee resources and workloads across offices.
  • Employee Development. Identify and develop opportunities for employee training within the discipline of cultural resources.
  • Support Practice Leaders. Provide interdisciplinary support to Practice/Discipline Leaders in fields such as environmental compliance or habitat restoration.
  • Recruiting. Help identify areas where key cultural resources hires would be beneficial to HELIX and participate in efforts to recruit excellent candidates for those positions. Help recruit and retain as-needed archaeologists. Help build and maintain relationships with Native American tribal representatives and monitors.
  • Help Develop and Implement Strategic Planning Goals. Provide input for the strategic planning process and development of strategic planning goals. Help support, and lead as applicable, the implementation of the firm's annual strategic planning goals.
  • Project Management/Principal Archaeologist/Principal Architectural Historian. Serve as a contract manager, project manager, and Principal Archaeologist or Principal Architectural Historian. Manage large projects and on-call contracts to the satisfaction of HELIX and our clients, completing high-quality work products on time and within budget, to HELIX standards, and to the satisfaction of the government lead agency/HELIX clients.
  • Administrative Tasks. Complete required administrative tasks (timesheets, invoices, backlog estimates, etc.) on time and to the satisfaction of the administrative managers.
  • Other Tasks. Work with CEO on other tasks as requested.

Minimum Requirements for Cultural Resources Discipline Leader
  • Master's Degree in archaeology, anthropology, history, or closely related field
  • At least 10 years of experience in archaeology or architectural history that includes preparation of proposals and archaeological or architectural history studies/reports and experience with agency consultation/coordination
  • A successful track record in business development in California, with proven sales generation and client relationships
  • Knowledge of the federal and California laws and regulations pertaining to historic and archaeological resource management and an understanding of regulatory agency programs, procedures, and policies related to cultural resource management, including NHPA, CEQA, and NEPA
  • Experience coordinating with Tribal representatives, resulting in positive Tribal relationships
  • Strong research, writing, organizational, and verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to travel occasionally to all of our HELIX office locations
