Job Details

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Notre Dame seeks a biological anthropologist to join our collegial, dynamic, integrative four-field department. This tenured position is at the associate/full professor level, and begins in August 2023.

We seek a scholar-teacher whose research complements or extends our existing departmental faculty expertise, with a perspective on the connections between lived, social experiences and biological processes in contemporary populations.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a productive record of studying areas such as social and structural determinants of health and biocultural approaches to behavior and well-being. We encourage applications from scholars using theoretical approaches related to the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD), evolutionary and life history theory, and biocultural perspectives. We have a particular interest in scholars incorporating aspects of human immunology, epigenetics, neurobiology, nutrition, or the microbiome in their research, while welcoming applicants in related areas as well. Geographic area is open.

Our department has an active program of undergraduate research and attracts top graduate students. Therefore, the candidate must demonstrate excellent lab/field and quantitative skills, to aid our students with innovative research to position them for post-doctoral and faculty positions and with skills for professional opportunities in the government and private sectors. They must be an excellent teacher, mentoring highly qualified graduate and undergraduate student research, and advising them towards academic and non-academic career goals.

The Department of Anthropology seeks to engage in integrative anthropology that includes creative collaboration across disciplinary lines, engaged scholarship, collegial relations, and the ability to incorporate students into active learning, research, and fieldwork. Those candidates who can engage with and involve undergraduates in research will be particularly appealing. A willingness to participate in the shared governance of the department and university service more generally is expected for this tenured position.

Candidates must provide a 1-2 page cover letter and a CV.

Deadline: September 15, 2022

Please direct any questions to the search committee chair: Dr. Lee Gettler (lgettler@nd.edu).
