SUMMARY

Partner Engineering & Science is seeking qualified archaeological field technicians for upcoming fieldwork in Texas and California, for on call contract work. The position has the opportunity to become full time.

Job Description:

Archaeological Field Technicians are responsible for conducting reconnaissance survey, the establishment of grids, artifact collection, test unit and feature excavation, and documentation. Archaeological field technicians are required to perform the following tasks in the field:

  • Conduct background research as needed (especially in California)

Conduct archaeological survey according to state standards and guidelines
Collecting data points of survey using GPS units
Complete field forms accurately and concisely
Provide accurate and detailed notes on soils, inclusions and any artifacts recovered
Properly label collection bags and samples
Map drawing per customary standards

TASKS

  • Physical demands of the position include manual labor - hand excavation, lifting, prolonged walking over rough terrains while carrying field equipment, and dealing with a variety of weather conditions.

May survey in remote locations and walk up to 10 miles per day over steep terrain, while carrying a pack weighing up to 45 pounds; however, many projects are located in established areas.
Will complete survey and shovel test forms, be familiar with handheld GPS units, and be able to work in a variety of situations with a variety of people.
Must have own transportation and basic equipment to perform pedestrian surveys.

Duties include research, pedestrian survey (walking transects, shovel testing, screening soils, detailed field notes/maps, working knowledge of GPS units and digital cameras to document, artifact documentation and/or collection according to states standards, artifact identification, and processing when required). Some projects may include test unit excavation, trenching activities, and data recovery.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA or BS in Anthropology/Archaeology or a closely related field and completed an archaeological field school (or equivalent experience)

Six months to one year of experience conducting field investigations of archaeological resources, including pedestrian survey and shovel testing. Experience with site evaluations and data recovery is a plus.
Must be familiar with the artifacts and features common to Texas and/or California history and prehistory.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to read, write, speak & comprehend English

Must be able to communicate clearly in person and over the telephone
Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading information from printed sources and computer screen
Requires frequent bending, reaching, standing, walking, sitting, pushing and pulling exerted regularly throughout the work shift
