Job Details

The Department of Anthropology and the Blount Scholars Program at The University of Alabama invite applications for a joint, renewable, full-time instructor position with appointment to begin on August 16th, 2022. The position is non-tenure-earning and extends for a one-year term with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory performance review, staffing needs, and funding. Minimum qualifications: PhD in Anthropology and experience teaching in a liberal arts curriculum with a strong writing emphasis. Teaching and service responsibilities will be divided equally between the two academic units.

Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be a cultural anthropologist whose teaching interests and research background directly complement the Department of Anthropology’s biocultural medical anthropology emphasis. The ideal candidate will also have a commitment to and experience teaching in a multidisciplinary, small-seminar, liberal arts curriculum. Applicants should have experience working with students to improve their writing skills (or with writing-intensive courses). Experience teaching in a living-learning community is highly desirable.

Teaching responsibilities in Anthropology will include a large undergraduate Introduction to Cultural Anthropology course, upper-level medical and/or Cognitive Anthropology classes, and advanced courses in the candidate’s speciality area. Teaching responsibilities in the Blount Program will include teaching in the first-year Foundations sequence (a year-long intellectual history survey in small seminar format comprising works in philosophy, theology, political theory, literature, and scientific theory), the senior Capstone Worldviews seminar (a multidisciplinary cultural theory course in which students produce a senior project), and occasional courses of the candidate’s own design.

Applications must be submitted via the University website at https://facultyjobs.ua.edu.

Unofficial transcripts must be uploaded with applications as “Other Documents.”

Applicants should arrange to have three letters of recommendation in Word or pdf format sent to the following email address: bsp@ua.edu

Deadline: Submit applications by June 1, 2022 for best consideration; screening of applications will continue until the position is filled.
