The British Museum is looking to appoint an innovative researcher to develop new projects on the Museum’ Native American collections, collaborating with communities nationally and internationally, to enhance public engagement and accessibility. This is an exciting opportunity to support the department’s contribution to the Museum’s cross-disciplinary research programme and ambitious masterplan – The Rosetta Project.

About the role
The Curator: Americas is a key role in our Africa, Oceania and Americas department. The role is required to deliver innovative research which enhances knowledge of the collection and also enables public accessibility, and to support engagement with source communities. The role will also support our Rosetta Project, the Museum’s masterplan for future development and all relevant Museum wide strategies.
You will be educated to degree level (or with equivalent experience gained) in Anthropology or a related subject. A member of relevant learned societies you will also have produced major publications in peer reviewed journals or in book form.
With experience of managing people, projects and budgets, you will be an open, effective communicator with good spoken and written English and also confident presenting in public in an engaging manner.
Experience of working in a Museum environment is essential, specifically in Native North American collections (excluding Mexico/Mesoamerica), and on temporary exhibitions or gallery refurbishment projects. You will be able to work effectively as a team with previous supervisor or director level experience of a research or fieldwork project in a relevant subject.
Key areas of responsibility:
- To lead, and raise money for, innovative research projects on, and beyond, the Americas collection, including projects involving external partners.
- To work collaboratively to improve the display of the Americas collection within the context of the Museum’s masterplan, both on- and off-site.
- To make the Americas collection, and knowledge about it, publicly accessible via publication, digital, display, and broadcast.
- To work collaboratively with other teams to deliver the move of the Americas collections from external storage facilities to the Bloomsbury site.
- To lead on up-grading the documentation of the Americas collection.
- To collaborate with other institutions or groups nationally and internationally, and to develop or ensure good relations with relevant stakeholders, in particular with source communities.
