Global Social Innovation Team

Founded in 2015, the Global Social Innovation (GSI) Team is in Corporate Affairs, which is part of the Strategy, Growth, and Data organization of PayPal. The GSI team collaborates with teams across the company to leverage PayPal's unique expertise and extends five types of capital (financial, human, network, intellectual, and reputation) to have sustainable social and environmental impact at scale. It uses a matrix operating model of bodies of work and functions. The bodies of work include (i) increased and diversified giving, (ii) financial health, (iii) economic equity and empowerment, (iv) environmental sustainability and climate resilience, and (v) community response and engagement. The functions include partnerships, employee mobilization, corporate and rapid response, learning, impact investing, customer mobilization, and data, evidence, and analysis for insights and innovation (data for good). To drive social impact and to help sustain our environment globally, the GSI team employs PayPal's platform, products, and assets - especially our people. The Global Social Innovation Team has colleagues based in the US (San Jose, CA; New York, NY; Austin, TX; Washington, DC), and seeks expansion outside of the United States.

Job Description Summary

This new role will contribute to PayPal's commitment to do its part to address economic inequities and inequality for underrepresented communities in the United States and globally. Continuing the work and drawing from lessons learned from PayPal's $535M commitment in the United States, you will develop and execute a global strategy (based on the Global Social Innovation's theory of change) for economic empowerment targeting People of Color (including and not limited to Black, Latinx, Indigenous). Your portfolio will also seek to advance racial wealth equity. Your strategy could include opportunities to leverage external partnerships (public, private, nonprofit) and PayPal's:
  • Intellectual Property: products, services, and data
  • Human Resources: employee time and skills
  • Reputation: voice and brand via communications and thought leadership
  • Financial Resources: corporate, employee, and customer contributions
  • Network: employees, customers (consumers, merchants, charities, developers, large enterprises)

Your strategy will be a part of a global economic equity and empowerment portfolio, which also includes women's economic empowerment, and in the future, your role will expand to include economic empowerment for other underrepresented populations, such as elderly, people with disabilities, and Veterans, among others. Your role will report directly to the Head of Global Social Innovation (who is based in Washington, DC) and will have intersections with other bodies of work, including financial health. This role does not include formal supervision responsibilities, but it will likely form and lead multi-disciplinary teams and working groups across the company. Travel will be light and only when determined safe within COVID pandemic conditions.

Economic Equity and Empowerment Expertise
  • Seasoned understanding of barriers to economic equity and empowerment for underrepresented populations of color (in US and/or global).
  • Deep knowledge and practice of tactics to remove barriers to economic equity and empowerment for People of Color.
  • Familiarity of role of digital financial services towards economic equity and empowerment of People of Color.

Strategy
  • Ability to create a tactical and scalable approach and execution plan towards measurable economic equity and empowerment outcomes.
  • Exceptional professional judgement and a listening orientation, keen analytical and business strategy skills, and the ability to think critically, make decisions, and justify recommendations and results based on evidence, data, and analysis.
  • Proven experience mobilizing various resources to have a measurable social impact, including partnerships, employee time and skills, product, reputational capital, intellectual capital and more.
  • Ability to help frame tradeoffs by developing approaches to measure the "but for" impact of our work, such as through comparing outcomes between our actual portfolio and our "anti-portfolio" (the work we do not pursue due to limits on time and money)
  • Established network and deep familiarity and relationships with the structure of and network in the economic equity and empowerment, community development communities, and with underrepresented populations.

Education and Experience
  • 12+ years relevant professional experience
  • Bachelor's degree minimum. Advanced degrees preferred (social and economic development, development economics, anthropology, or related fields)
  • Experience in supporting organizational, systems, and culture change and development.
  • Meaningful experience with and/or knowledge of underrepresented populations in low-income and/or developing country context.
  • A track record of impact ideally demonstrated throughout a career spanning the private, financial, or public sectors.
  • Success in working across time zones, in a matrix, and with stakeholders across several teams.
  • Exposure to and comfort with other cultures and the ability to operate comfortably and effectively in various cultural settings.
  • Experience building coalitions, public goods, and other field and ecosystem-building
