PNNL's Earth Systems Science Division enables energy independence and national security through leadership in earth systems science, engineering, and decision analytics. Our work focuses on solving complex problems in the dynamic Earth system. Our interdisciplinary scientists steward a breadth of efforts that encompass research on plants to groundwater science and coastal zones, to storm prediction.
Our research focuses on understanding operational risks at the interface of human and natural environments. This includes informed decision making and enhanced community resilience, community and stakeholder engagement, and assessment of environmental impacts from energy system siting, construction, operation, and decommissioning. Driven by a "science-to-solutions" philosophy, we provide scientific leadership and technology to enhance national security, mitigate natural hazards and optimize disaster response. In the critical areas of energy, environment, intelligence, and defense, we deliver insights and decision support through the development of tools and solutions.
The selected individual will work with and/or lead an interdisciplinary team in support of various federal agencies to identify American Indian tribes that may have historic and cultural connections to project areas; develop and execute strategies and engagement plans and support various federal sponsor's American Indian tribal consultation activities related to National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The individual may also support state and federal agencies by conducting alternatives analysis, trade-off assessments as well as cumulative impacts assessment to inform environmental assessments.
- BS/BA with 5 years of experience
- MS/MA with 3 years of experience
- PhD with 1 year of experience
- MS/MA or PhD in anthropology, archeology, or related field.
- Demonstrated experience working with American Indian tribes and conducting American Indian tribal engagement activities and events
- Demonstrated experience developing and executing American Indian tribal engagement strategies and plans
- Familiarity and experience with analyzing policy and regulatory requirements associated with environmental assessments such as the NEPA and/or NHPA
- Demonstrated experience with stakeholder engagement
- Demonstrated experience working with and leading project teams
- Experience in GIS mapping and spatial analysis
