Length: 39 weeks; full time 40hrs/week

Living Allowance: $600.00/week

AmeriCorps Education Award: Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $4,441.50 (pre-tax)

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIPP in partnership with the National Park Service are seeking an intern who will assist in the creation and update of curriculum for the park's Youth Engagement program. Curriculum will cover natural and cultural resources, sustainability, stewardship, and leadership. The intern will also provide in-classroom and in-park educational programing for at risk and Title 1 schools, in addition to distance learning for schools locally, around the country, and beyond. Interns will work directly with community leaders, educators, philanthropic organizations, and the general public to create deeper connections to NPS resources and stories. Participants will gain experience in careers with the NPS through participation in programs and projects leading to future NPS carriers.

Position Responsibilities will include:
  • Develop and update Youth Engagement program curriculum.
  • Help guide summer youth program participants through developed curriculum.
  • Present in-park, in-school, and distance learning educational programing.
  • Provide informal information, orientation, and interpretation to the visiting public out in the park or in the visitor center.
  • Assist with opening and/or securing the site.


Minimum Requirements:
  • Some education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or coursework in a related field. (Related fields of study include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, social sciences, museum sciences, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.). OR
  • Possess specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; deliver structured and informal presentations using various communication techniques to a variety of audiences; archeological or historical preservation research work involving presentations.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must be a US Citizen or legal permanent resident.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of coursework in a related field described above.
