Summary

The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a full-time Research Assistant to provide research support in ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of genomics. This position will work with Dr. Stacey Pereira, PhD on several current funded and pilot projects that investigate ethical and policy issues in precision medicine, genetics of epilepsy, polygenic risk scores, and genetics of cardiometabolic disorders.

This is a non-laboratory, non-clinical position.

In addition to supporting the Center's robust research program, the Research Assistant will have the opportunity to participate in professional and academic development sessions hosted by the Center including journal clubs, career development information sessions, and staff development events, including in-services on grant writing, academic presentations, and goal planning. The Center promotes an intellectually stimulating and collaborative environment conducive to academic excellence.

Job Duties

  • Works closely with the Principal Investigator to support the day-to-day progress on various studies related to ELSI issues, including projects on genetics of cardiovascular and metabolic disease, genetics of epilepsy, and polygenic risk scores.
  • Manages survey programming and data management to ensure quality and identify and address issues as they arise.
  • Conducts surveys in English over the phone with patients about their experience with genetic testing.
  • Conducts qualitative interviews.
  • Assists with analysis of qualitative interviews.
  • Conducts literature searches and summarize information.
  • Builds reports based on findings for research team and collaborators.
  • Tracks project deliverables and ensure timely completion.
  • Helps develop scholarly papers and presentations for dissemination of findings.
  • Assists Principal Investigator with submission of new grant applications.
  • Attends project meetings and maintain detailed summaries of meeting outcomes.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Bioethics, Public Health, Social Sciences (sociology, psychology, anthropology, etc.) or related field.
  • Experience or training related to the ethical, social and legal implications of genomics.
  • Experience using REDCap, Qualtrics, MAXQDA, or other survey administration and qualitative analysis software.
  • Experience leading or contributing to scholarly papers and presentations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of flexibility in accepting work assignments, with the ability to effectively prioritize tasks, understand processes, and resolve issues.
