The College of Science is looking for a highly experienced leader to become the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion ( DEI ), reporting directly to the Dean. The Director of DEI will be a leader, advisor, advocate, catalyst for change, and institutional resource focused on infusing DEI into all programs and activities, tracking progress toward these goals, and communicating progress to an engaged College of Science community.

The College of Science at George Mason University blends traditional science education with sought-after programs in molecular medicine, climate dynamics, planetary science, forensic science, environmental studies, and geoinformation science to prepare students for exciting careers at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary scientific domains.

Responsibilities:

The Director of DEI will serve as the diversity officer of the College of Science, leading and overseeing the College's commitment to DEI . The Director of DEI will collaborate with the Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer at the University level and other academic units.

Other responsibilities of the Director of DEI are:
  • Serve as a change agent, consultant, thought-leader, influencer and subject matter expert ( SME ) on diversity, equity and inclusion ( DEI ) related issues that impact the College of Science.
  • Create communications (i.e., electronic, social, and print media) designed to increase diversity and inclusion awareness for the College of Science.
  • Lead the College in implementing strategic initiatives, including the creation of a culture for equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Partner and collaborate with campus leaders, faculty, students, staff, protected veterans, and internal and external constituencies to ensure programming supports the College's values and strategic goals.
  • Provide strategic direction for training initiatives on cultural competency, gender differences, disability, sexual harassment, building a climate of equity and inclusion, and other topics designed to increase awareness and support of equity and inclusion values. Certify that training is compliant with applicable laws in collaboration with required parties.
  • Develop accountability measures that support compliance, advocacy and continued education. Intake and investigate concerns across the College that pertains to discrimination and harassment.
  • Direct and enhance the College's SMART goals, as outlined in the College of Science Inclusive Excellence (IE) Plan by positively influencing and supporting change management and/or departmental/enterprise initiatives within assigned areas of responsibility. Develop policies and procedures related to program initiatives.
  • Collaborate with College of Science and the University to ensure that DEI is in the College of Science curriculum, infrastructure, policies and programs.
  • Collaborate with College leadership to create, implement and monitor programs designed to ensure fair and equitable treatment of students, faculty and staff.
  • Manage the DEI budget, including developing budget proposals, justifying expenses and monitoring accounts.
  • Analyze and make executable recommendations on complex management and administrative issues, including identifying alternative solutions, projecting consequences of proposed actions, and making recommendations in support of goals.
  • Design and implement talent management processes and systems to increase diversity of faculty and staff.
  • Manage direct report(s) and cross functional teams.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution and significant (typically 8-10 years) of progressive management or supervisory experience both with direct reports and with cross functional teams that do not have a direct, formal reporting structure; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral), specifically as it relates to communicating to a variety of internal and external stakeholders about diversity, equity and inclusion. Comfortable presenting to large, diverse audiences.
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills, and the ability to function independently.
  • Ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
  • Successful experience in managing and resolving conflict, building consensus, and making sound judgments in a complex environment.
  • Leadership experience in academic, corporate, and/or nonprofit organizations effectively working with historically underrepresented groups, including but not limited to African American, Latino(a)/Latinx, and Native American/Alaska Native, LGBTQ+ identified people, and those discriminated against based on religion and disabilities.
  • Track record of program implementation, strategic planning, and managing multiple priorities.
  • Expertise building collaborations between academia, industry and/or internal stakeholders across all functions.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in a research-intensive university. Expert ability to work with dynamic and diverse group of faculty, staff and students.
  • A Master's degree in social justice, post-secondary education, sociology, social anthropology, public administration, human resource management or other related fields.
  • Extensive (typically 10+ years) of DEI focused experience, including leadership and managerial experience.
  • Considerable (typically 5+ years) experience advancing DEI and anti-racism in complex organizations.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and facilitating and/or training.
  • Experience with conflict resolution and mediation methods.
