Position description

The Black Studies Project (BSP) Associate Director supports the mission, sustainability, and growth of the intellectual life of scholars, students, and staff working in Black Studies and related fields at UC San Diego. BSP at UC San Diego focuses on three areas that are vital to contemporary African American and African Diaspora Studies and central to the study of life, history, politics, cultural production, and social movements in the US and globally: Intersectional Analysis of Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality; Transnational and Diasporic Studies; and Social Justice Movements. Since the initial conception and launch of BSP, program offerings have grown to include a speaker series, national research collaborations, a set of academic fellowships (faculty, pre-doctoral, dissertation, and post-doctoral), a Social Justice Fellows program to sustain connections between local artists and organizers, and an Undergraduate Research Internship Program. While program offerings are growing, long-term vitality for the BSP community requires effective infrastructure and creative strategic ideas that support growth while supporting intellectual life on a smaller, yet vibrant scale. The Associate Director will work closely with the BSP Faculty Directors and staff to collaborate in enacting this vision, provide continuity of programming, and sustain intellectual community on campus. We serve four primary communities: faculty, graduate and undergraduate students and the general public.

Applied Research and Outreach:
Collaborate in ongoing vision of long-term and short-term events
Build a system-wide network of collaboration, intellectual exchange and
professional support among faculty in Black Studies from every UC
campus and the US more broadly
Serve as point person with community partnerships and initiatives

Internal Relations:
Day-to-day functioning of programs (e.g., onboarding, logistics)
Liaison for hiring (student researchers, community fellows, etc.)
Bridge between operations and intellectual work
Communicate ideas and opportunities to affiliated faculty
Interface with Executive Committee (a small team of interdisciplinary
faculty)
Work with graduate students
Work with undergraduate students
Report to the BSP Director(s) for program administration
Develop annual work plan and provide updates
Participate in relevant professional conferences and community
organizations
Represent BSP at seminars and events
Develop and maintain effective communication with programmatic units on
campus, including with the new major program in Black Diaspora and
African American Studies
Response team leader for organizing timely responses to community
issues
Staying informed about who is on campus (retention and hiring information
for faculty, welcoming new students on campus working in this field)
Strategic and creative understandings of growth and trends
Collaborate with campus development efforts to fundraise for BSP (grant
writing, initiative development)
Working with directors to survey faculty needs around programming,
support for intellectual projects

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Ideal candidates will have a background in Black Studies and/or affiliated fields including gender studies, ethnic studies and arts education.

MA required in one of the following or a related discipline: Black Diaspora Studies, Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, History, Communication, Education, Anthropology, Performance Studies, Performing Arts or Creative Writing.

Preferred qualifications

MFA/PhD preferred in one of the following or a related discipline: Black Diaspora Studies, Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, History, Communication, Education, Anthropology, Performance Studies, Performing Arts or Creative Writing.

Experience running event programming, grant writing preferred.
