Job Details

The Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences (https://thcas.ecu.edu) at East Carolina University (https://www.ecu.edu) invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track or tenured appointment with research broadly centered on the African American experience in the United States to begin August 2022.  The successful applicant will join one of the following departments: Anthropology; Geography, Planning and Environment; History; or Sociology.

Scholars seeking a tenured position will be expected to have already established a record of funding, research, and publication nationally recognized by scholars in their field. Scholars seeking a tenure-track position must demonstrate this potential.  Candidates must be committed to quality teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level and develop new courses related to the African American experience in the United States and to teach existing courses in their home department. Service to the university, community, and profession is expected.

A PhD in Anthropology, Geography, History, or Sociology (or closely related disciplines) is required; however, ABD candidates may be considered. Candidates with PhD conferred at the time of initial appointment will hold the rank appropriate to their record (e.g., probationary rank of Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor, or Full Professor). ABD candidates will be initially appointed with the probationary term rank of Assistant Professor and must have the terminal degree conferred prior to first reappointment. Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Tenured candidates will have already established a record of effective and innovative teaching, research supervision, and engagement with students. Tenure-track candidates will demonstrate clear potential to establish such a record of teaching, research supervision and engagement with students

Preference will be given to candidates whose research, teaching, and service align with and can contribute to one or more of the following interdisciplinary programs in the Harriot College of Arts and Sciences: African and African American Studies; Coastal and Marine Studies; Environmental Studies; Gender Studies.

For scholars seeking a tenured position, preference will be given to those who demonstrate clear evidence of external funding. For scholars seeking a tenure track position, preference will be given to those who demonstrate a clear potential to develop a funded research program.

Applications must be submitted online at https://ecu.peopleadmin.com and should include the following documents: (1) cover letter describing relevant qualifications including research accomplishments and goals, teaching and mentoring approach, and how the candidate will contribute to one or more of the interdisciplinary programs listed above; (2) curriculum vitae; (3) contact information for three current references. Applicants are expected to include examples of or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusivity in their cover letter.

Additional questions can be sent to search committee co-chairs Professor Dr. Bob Edwards (edwardsr@ecu.edu) and Assistant Professor Dr. Ryan Schacht (schachtr18@ecu.edu).
