Job Details

The Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada) invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in Anthropological Archaeology to begin July 1, 2022.

We welcome applications from broadly trained archaeologists whose primary expertise involves quantitative and/or laboratory methods, especially those focused on materiality and collections (including lithics, zooarchaeology, archaeobotany, etc.). The ability to lead an archaeological field program and a willingness to work with local communities is also desirable.

Candidates must be able to teach a broad range of courses in anthropological archaeology alongside courses in their area of expertise both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Successful applicants should be able to teach in at least two of the following areas:  field and excavation methods, human evolution, human osteology, anthropological/archaeological theory, zooarchaeology, or quantitative methods. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of research, service, graduate supervision, and undergraduate and graduate teaching. The candidate should have a Ph.D. in Anthropology, Archaeology or related discipline, although applicants who will have successfully defended the Ph.D. dissertation by the position start date will be considered. The start date for the position will be July 1, 2022.

The successful candidate will have access to the Laboratory of Archaeology facilities including specialized labs for biomolecular analysis, scanning electron microscopy, lithics, ceramics, fauna/archaeobotany, geoarchaeology, and GIS.  For information about the Department, visit http://anth.ubc.ca.

We are actively seeking to recruit from a diverse pool of applicants. We strongly encourage applications from Indigenous scholars and from minority groups underrepresented in post-secondary institutions in North America. Review of applications will begin on February 14, 2022, and continue until the position is filled. Applicants should apply through the Department of Anthropology portal, APPLY HERE.

Applicants should be prepared to upload the following in the order listed (single PDF file). Only complete applications will be considered: 1) a letter of application that includes a statement of research and teaching interests; 2) a curriculum vita; 3) a one-page statement of teaching philosophy; 4) evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g. teaching evaluations and/or course syllabi; 5 pages max); 5) a one-page statement about the experience working with a diverse student body and contributions or potential contributions to creating/advancing a culture of equity and inclusion; 6) and a list of contacts for 3 references.

Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C. Human Rights Code, including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Métis, Inuit, or Indigenous person. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

This position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Given the uncertainty caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic, applicants must be prepared to conduct interviews remotely if circumstances require. A successful applicant may be asked to consider an offer containing a deadline without having been able to make an in-person visit to campus if travel and other restrictions are still in place.
