Assistant/Associate Professor Queer Studies

The College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech invites applicants to apply for an Assistant or Associate professorship to advance transdisciplinary research, teaching, and engagement in Queer Studies. The position may contribute to the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences’ new Academy of Transdisciplinary Studies (ATS). The successful applicant will be appointed as a tenure-track (assistant professor) or tenured (associate professor) faculty member in one of the departments or schools in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.
The College’s recently established ATS fosters teaching, research, and service activities that aim to solve complex problems that challenge the boundaries of traditional disciplines. A core line of inquiry in the Academy explores intersections of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice across and beyond disciplines. This position will be central to the development of a minor in Queer Studies as well as teaching Queer courses in the Academy’s established Women’s and Gender Studies program and to future directions of the established ASPECT (the Alliance for Social, Political, Ethical, and Cultural Thought) transdisciplinary graduate program.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in hand by August 10, 2022, with a concentration or emphasis in Women’s, Transgender, Queer Studies, Sexuality Studies, or related fields. We seek dynamic and collaborative candidates who demonstrate excellence or the promise of excellence as scholars and a proven record of pedagogical distinction.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate fully in the research, teaching, and service of the Queer Studies minor and of their home department, to deliver our undergraduate and graduate curriculum, and to sustain cross-disciplinary, cross-departmental connections with other units on campus. Candidates should be prepared to teach using online modalities. Members of groups historically underrepresented in the professoriate are especially encourage to apply.
The College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences is the second largest college of the university; the humanities and social sciences have a strong presence on campus. We have a Center for the Humanities, a LGBTQ+ Resource Center and soon, a LGBTQ+ Living and Learning Community, the Lavender House.
The standard course load is two/two courses per academic year. The home department will expect an active publishing profile and the presentation of papers at national conferences. The successful candidate also will be required to have a criminal background check.

- Expertise in Queer Studies as it relates to identities and to queering as a method and a theoretical framework
- A demonstrated ability to locate queer theory intersectionally
- Scholarship or teaching that centers any of the following: decolonial; diasporic; development; anti-racist; studies; inhumanisms
- A transnational [global] queer studies lens
- Demonstrated experience with outreach or service that engages with spaces and communities in or outside the U.S.
