Summary:

In Infrastructure at Facebook we build tools and systems to support our internal teams with data-driven decisions and in shipping awesome products quickly. Our purpose-built tools range from data-intensive applications to powering the entire developer lifecycle from code authoring to launch, including reviews, verification, and compliance checks. Our goal is an infrastructure that is reliable and fast, yields good high quality outcomes with a good user experience, and ensures that every second of engineering time is spent on the things that matter.As the Design and Research team in Infrastructure we play a critical role in understanding product requirements to support internal teams and employees. Were here to improve usability, information architecture, and consistency. Our research insights are the foundation for establishing product vision and definition in partnership with Engineering, Product Management, and Data Science and other cross-functional partners.About the role:We are looking for candidates who will contribute to and help elevate the practice of research with creative and rigorous qualitative, quantitative, and/or design research methods. The right candidate will be an effective communicator, passionate about understanding people and their needs, curious about the relationship between employee workflows, technology and data, comfortable in a flat, fast-moving organization, and a great collaborator.

Required Skills:
  • Orchestrate strategic visioning and analytical activity, moving between macro trends and micro trends in employee workflows and internal tools, and developing substantiated point of views
  • Work closely with product teams, as well as other researchers, to identify important research questions
  • Act as a thought leader in research, while advocating for people who use our products
  • Generate insights that shape how product teams think about medium and long-term product strategy
  • Design and execute studies that address both user behavior and attitudes, using the right methodology for the right questions
  • Work cross-functionally with product design, product management, data science, content design, and engineering
  • Communicate insights in creative and compelling ways
  • Comfort with utilizing data to define and support hypotheses

  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • In process of obtaining a PhD in a human behavior-related field, such as Human-Computer Interaction, Organizational Sciences, Psychology, Sociology, Communication, Anthropology, Information Science, Computer Science, Design Research (such as a research focused track in Communication Design, Industrial Design, Service Design), or Political Science
  • First-hand experience conducting empirical research
  • Knowledge of research methods in at least one subset of methods (e.g., survey design and quantitative data analysis, ethnography, usability research) - qualitative and/or quantitative research
  • Experience conveying research findings and implications to audiences
  • Analytical, project management, and problem-solving experience
  • Experience with autonomy and independent decision making to weigh tradeoffs and balance demands
  • Experience mentoring other researchers and maintain our team's standard of work
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience or interest in shaping employee-facing products and processes or enterprise software are a plus.
  • Experience with research regarding employee-facing products and processes or enterprise software or compliance processes
  • Experience publishing academic research on human-computer interaction
  • Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op
