CSI is a growing interinstitutional research and education enterprise that undertakes innovative basic and applied coastal research from a scenic new waterfront campus on Roanoke Island. These changes are a result of an expanded institutional recognition that ocean margins are critical coastal regions of the Earth where continents and oceans interact, and they are measurably changing in response to societal impacts and natural variability. Approximately 40% of the global population lives within 100 km of the shore. The significance of margins to coastal residents and ecosystems is enormous. A centerpiece of this renewed commitment was the formation of a new Department of Coastal Studies ( DCS ) ( https://coastal.ecu.edu/coastalstudies/ ) in 2018. Primarily a research department, the DCS coordinates and enhances research communities across ECU's Greenville campuses, the Outer Banks campus, our partner Institutions, and with associates around the world. DCS provides ECU with a strong center and point of contact to expand its leadership role in addressing interdisciplinary coastal and marine issues. The Department of Coastal Studies includes faculty on both the ECU -Greenville campus and the ECU -Outer Banks campus. These locations enable faculty to take advantage of the resources available on the main campus, as well as having cutting-edge laboratories, classrooms, and boating facilities directly on the Croatan Sound. This arrangement is ideal for coastal research faculty who rely on proximity to the coast and regional relationships to leverage established near-shore data resources and infrastructure, investigate real-time coastal processes (natural and human), or engage coastal stakeholders in their work. Existing DCS / CSI faculty have expertise in applied geography, engineering, remote sensing, coupled human-natural processes, hydrology, anthropology and ethnography, physical oceanography, fisheries ecology, and interdisciplinary coastal studies.
