JPF06969 - Tenure Track Faculty Position in Environmental Justice
The UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the field of environmental justice. We are interested in hiring a colleague who brings an interdisciplinary lens to understanding how one or more of the many dimensions of environmental racism and justice impact the lives of people in underserved communities. We welcome all methodological approaches but are especially interested in scholars who have a track record of on-the-ground engagement and community-based research and partnerships. We encourage applications from scholars who work on ecologies of marginalized communities, areas that include but are not limited to climate change and its effects; energy justice and a just transition; water resources and water equity; food justice; pollution; health outcomes; race and the environment; Indigenous stewardship; Indigenous communities, sovereignty, and justice; environmental liberation; science technology studies, and social change. We are particularly interested in scholars whose work seeks to address the important role of place in fostering transformations toward a more just society, have a track record of interdisciplinary collaboration, and have partnerships with minority-serving institutions and community-based organizations.
UCLA faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. This position has an anticipated start date of Autumn 2022 and will have a 9-month service period. The successful candidate will teach three courses per academic year over three quarters, including undergraduate and graduate courses in their areas of specialization as well as other Institute classes.
We welcome applicants from all fields including Ethnic Studies, the social sciences, and humanistic social sciences: ecologies of color (American Indian Studies, African and African American Studies, Black ecologies, Chicano, Latina/o, Latinx Studies, American Pacific Islander), American Studies, Anthropology, Architecture, Economics, Education, Law, Geography, History, Political Science, Public Health, Public Policy, Sociology, Urban Planning, Theology and related areas of study. Scholars in STEM or STS fields aligned with Ethnic Studies, social sciences, and humanistic social sciences are also encouraged to apply.
The Institute is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service as appropriate to the position. The candidate’s orientation to teaching and research should correspond with the Institute’s commitment to social justice.
Applicants must hold an earned Ph.D. with an interdisciplinary training in Environmental Justice by date of hire.
The successful candidate must have a strong interdisciplinary approach to research and teaching. The successful candidate will have excellent teaching skills and record. Experience in on-the-ground engagement and community-based research and partnerships is desirable.
The Institute of the Environment and Sustainability’s (IoES) primary mission is to identify, study and provide solutions for regional and global environmental problems, and to educate the next generation of scholars and leaders. The Institute achieves this mission through its 12 core faculty, over 60 affiliated faculty from across UCLA, an undergraduate B.S. in Environmental Science program, an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program, and a Doctorate in Environmental Science and Engineering. The IoES emphasizes community engagement, practical experience, and a commitment to science communication.
