Job Details

The Department of Anthropology at Bates College seeks to hire a Chair of the department, starting in the fall of 2022. The new chair will lead a collaborative re-organization and rebuilding of the three-person department after a series of retirements, where the focus will be on socio-cultural anthropology. In addition to the chair, the unit has two faculty lines, at least one of which the chair will help recruit. The new chair will have a PhD in socio/cultural anthropology, ideally at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, with an active research program and demonstrated leadership experience, preferably at the level of an academic unit. The position is open with regards to research focus and region of interest. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to inclusive pedagogy and the success of historically underrepresented, marginalized and first-generation students are encouraged to apply.

The new chair is also expected to continue the department’s history of contributing generously to interdisciplinarity at Bates, with most of its courses cross-listed with other academic units. The curricular structure of the major and the minor is flexible from a student point of view. We expect the chair to continue this tradition of contributing to other academic units through collaboration and cross-listing of courses.

In addition to teaching and maintaining a strong scholarly presence, the chair’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, leadership in strengthening the departmental curriculum, mentoring new colleagues, developing departmental practices that are attentive to equity and inclusion, carrying out administrative tasks, and effectively communicating with colleagues and the administration. Full teaching load at Bates is 5-courses a year, plus the advising of senior theses. During the term as chair, the teaching load is 4-courses a year, plus the advising of theses.

A complete application includes a cover letter, curriculum vita, statements on teaching, research and academic leadership, all of which should discuss how you foster equity and inclusion in your teaching, research and leadership roles. We also ask that you submit the name of at least four references who can address your strengths as a professor, two of whom should also be able to speak to your administrative experience and qualities.

Review of applications begins January 10th, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. If you have any questions about this position, please contact Áslaug Ásgeirsdóttir, at aasgeirs@bates.edu, who currently chairs the department.

Employment is contingent upon completion of a successful background check.
