DESCRIPTION

This is work providing custody, care and management of inmates, in a penal or rehabilitative institution and/or residents in a mental health facility in accordance with established regulations and procedures.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Monitors conduct of inmates, offenders, residents or patients according to established policies, regulations, and procedures, to prevent escape or violence.

Takes inmates, offenders, residents or patients into custody and escorts to locations within and outside of facility, such as visiting room, courtroom, health facility or airport.

Inspects locks, window bars, grills, doors, and gates at correctional facility, to prevent escape.

Uses weapons, handcuffs, and physical force to maintain discipline and order among inmates, offenders, residents or patients.

Searches inmates, offenders, residents or patients' cells, rooms, vehicles, perimeter fences, and any other area that an inmate, offender, resident or patient may have access to, for weapons, valuables, drugs or any other unauthorized item and or contraband.

Provides Security to the entrance and exit of the facility; to include the screening of visitors, staff and other authorized personnel attempting to enter the facility.

Records information, and maintains a log of all inmates, offenders, residents or patients' identification, charges, and any other pertinent information as needed.

Serves meals and distributes commissary items to inmates, offenders, residents or patients.

Uses investigative and interrogation techniques and arrest procedures.

Collects, analyzes and interprets evidence to write, review and evaluate reports.

Supervises and evaluates offender progress and recommends intensity of supervision.

Review case records to determine nature and extent of inmate or offender's criminal record and current and prospective social problems.

Reviews and evaluates legal and social history and progress of offender or inmate.

Informs offender or inmate of requirements of conditional release, such as office visits, restitution

payments, or educational and employment stipulations.

Counsels offender and refers offender to social resources of community or specialized treatment programs.

Formulates management plan for each assigned offender or inmate.

Conducts on-going interview with offender and resources associated with offender or inmate and institutional personnel to determine social progress, individual problems, needs, interest, attitude and progress.

Provides surveillance, supervision and control of offenders.

Represents the department in revocation hearings for assigned offenders by providing court testimony, information and recommendations to judges regarding offender case and probation or sentence violations.

Coordinates interstate and intrastate transfer cases.

Prepares and maintains case folder for each assigned inmate or offender.

Conducts special investigations.

Conducts warrantless arrests of offenders under specified circumstances to protect the public.
