Assistant Professor Position

Department of Anthropology, College of Behavioral and Social Science

The Position: California State University, Chico is seeking faculty who are competent in their field, excellent teachers, collaborative with colleagues and staff, and committed to student success. We are seeking a tenure-track combined position in Archaeology and Museum Studies. Candidates must be able to teach lower and upper division undergraduate courses and graduate courses in the areas of Archaeology and Museum studies. Strong preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated expertise in historical archaeology with evidence of museum background and experience in the collection management.

Salary: Salary commensurate with education and experience.

Qualification Details:

  • Ph.D. (all requirements  met no later than August 17, 2022) in Anthropology, Archaeology, or Museum Studies;
  • Demonstrated expertise in historical archaeology;
  • Evidence of museum background with demonstrated experience in the collections management.  Preferred Qualifications:  
  • Demonstrated teaching experience, strong record of professional, and scholarly activities;
  • Areas of research specialization centered on underrepresented minority communities preferred, such as Native American, Latinx, African-American, and Asian-American. Having an active research agenda focusing on historic injustices to marginalized peoples and contested heritages a plus.
  • Specialization in collection curation and object restoration, collection digitization and accessibility, and interpretation of diverse communities’ knowledge and resources;
  • Maintains an active research program and evidence of external research funding;
  • Commitment to teaching excellence;
  • Willingness to assist the University’s commitment to NAGPRA Compliance; Responsibilities: 

This tenure-track position carries responsibilities in the areas of teaching archaeology and museum studies at both the graduate and undergraduate level, advancing the museum studies program and Valene L. Smith Museum of Anthropology, maintaining an active participation in scholarship, and service to the North State and student advancement.

The Anthropology Department adheres to the four-field approach to anthropology. We currently have 175 undergraduate and 25 graduate students enrolled in program.
