The Department of Communication and Media at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Media Studies or a related field for an appointment beginning Fall 2022.

Applicants must have a Ph.D., Ed.D., or foreign degree equivalent in Media Studies, Communication, or a closely related field and evidence of successful collegiate teaching at the time of appointment. The ideal candidate will have additional training in or collaborative research with computer science, data science, or data visualization. The department currently offers a B.S. in Communication, Media & Design, an M.S. in Communication & Rhetoric, and a Ph.D. in Communication & Rhetoric.

Preferred research interests for this position include disinformation analysis and detection; media bias; public communication and rhetoric; media dissemination and representation of science such as climate change or health; democracy, social justice, and equity in algorithmic media; or the effect of social media enclaves and partisan online communities on democratic processes.

The successful candidate will teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels that reflect their expertise and contribute to the department’s expansion in the areas of media ethics and public communication about science. We are particularly interested in scholars who take an intersectional approach to issues of social identity such as gender identity, socio-economic class, religion, ethnicity, or race.
