The Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Ethnography of Digital Futures at the rank of Assistant Professor commencing July 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.  

Applicants must have scholarly training and teaching experience in Anthropology. A Ph.D.  in Anthropology (or cognate fields) by July 1, 2022 is required by the start of the appointment. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and, when appropriate, externally funded research at the highest level and contribute to the scholarly life at York University through collegial service. The successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The position will involve undergraduate teaching and may involve graduate teaching and supervision.  

Applicants must have a clearly articulated program of research and/or research creation and specialize in digital futures and virtual worlds, in digital technologies and/or new media. We are looking for an anthropologist whose research is informed by decolonizing perspectives. Possible interests may include: 1) the ethnographic study of online practices and virtual communities; 2) the socio-cultural study of social media and digital infrastructures with a focus on social change; and 3) virtual worlds and on-line technologies that may address race, equity, Indigeneity, health, disability, gender and sexuality, and the environment. The ability to teach digital research methodologies will be an asset. The successful candidate’s research program will contribute to our research strengths and reputation, with the expectation for national and international research leadership.  

A demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence in research and in teaching is required. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence as demonstrated in: the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications); research creation; conference presentations; honours and awards. Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations.
