Job Details

The School of Global Integrative Studies (SGIS) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Anthropology division, invites applications for a Biocultural Anthropologist to be appointed as a tenure-track assistant professor beginning in August 2022. This search is in collaboration with the Rural Drug Addiction Research Center (RDAR), National Institute of General Medical Science’s Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) program. The RDAR center brings together researchers who focus on brain chemistry, social patterns of drug use, epigenetic understandings of biology and experience, and others to understand the full experience (from “synapses to society”) of drug addiction in rural contexts (see https://rdar.unl.edu for more information). The successful candidate will develop an outstanding research program at SGIS that results in peer-reviewed publications and external funding appropriate to the subdiscipline and that can accommodate participation of graduate and undergraduate students, teach undergraduate and graduate courses along with contributing to program, college, and university affairs, as appropriate to their rank.

We seek applicants who are theoretically grounded and empirically engaged in biocultural anthropology with a specialty in epigenetics. This includes, but is not limited to, field and/or lab-based research, as well as the statistical analysis and bioinformatics aspects of epigenetic datasets. The successful candidate will contribute to RDAR’s work on addiction and drug use, while also complementing other SGIS and RDAR faculty in contributing to larger topics of inequality and health disparities. In the area of teaching, we seek a colleague prepared to play an active role in expanding health-related curricular offerings and who can teach courses ranging from introductory undergraduate to graduate levels. Candidates whose qualifications bridge into this specialty areas are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Anthropology or a related field by the start of employment; a research agenda, with or promise of external funding and publications in relevant peer-reviewed venues; and evidence of excellence in undergraduate university-level teaching.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln and SGIS are looking for experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching, engagement in scholarly work, and experience in research mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate experience with inclusive pedagogical practices and who provide evidence of experience in teaching and mentoring a diverse population of students.

Review of applications will begin December 10, 2021 and continue until the position is filled or the search is closed. To be considered, please go to http://employment.unl.edu, requisition F_210115. Click “Apply to this Job” and complete the information form. Applications will include: 1) cover letter; 2) curriculum vitae including list of publications; presentations; past, current, and pending funding; and research and teaching appointments; 3) a statement describing research, teaching interests, and experience; your potential to foster intra and interdepartmental connections; your experiences working with people of diverse cultures and identities; and how your work fits the focus of the RDAR COBRE mission; and 4) a list of three references.

As an EO/AA employer, qualified applicants are considered for employment without regard to race, color, ethnicity, national origin, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, marital status, and/or political affiliation. See http://www.unl.edu/equity/notice-nondiscrimination.

Company

The Department of Anthropology synthesizes humanistic and scientific perspectives on human biological and cultural diversity as well as the evolutionary trends seen for humankind. Students and faculty bring this integrated perspective to interactions and collaborations with others in a variety of departments and programs in each of the Colleges across the University.

Courses in anthropology acquaint students with the range of human behavior as differentially explored within each of the subdisciplines within anthropology—archaeology, biological anthropology, and cultural anthropology. Research or methodological courses outfit students with valuable analytic and research skills in qualitative, quantitative and GIS analysis as well as in content-appropriate analytic protocols, as for the analysis of archaeological and ethnographic materials.
