Sealaska Heritage Institute's (SHI) mission is to perpetuate and enhance the cultures of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian people, promoting cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding. As the Culture & History Intern, you will gain introductory knowledge and hands-on experience in the library/archives/museum fields. You will become proficient in the use of SHI's online collections database, gain experience with digital and physical archival and objects collections, and gain understanding of collections best practices. Enhance your Indigenous studies or anthropology courses while you develop skills in cultural interpretation. Your work this summer will help you become more familiar with the concept of Indigenous cultural landscapes, especially those of Southeast Alaska.

This internship will take place in-person at the Sealaska Heritage Institute office in Juneau, AK. Depending on company and local health guidelines, the intern may have the opportunity to lead public tours of SHI's exhibits onsite in downtown Juneau.

  • Work with the SHI Culture & History team to preserve collections, objects, and archives
  • Assist in archives and collections management projects including processing collections and storage mount construction
  • Synthesize information from historical documents
  • Conduct research to develop finding aids for use in archival research
  • Update the artifact online database
  • Develop skills in cultural interpretation
  • Lead public tours of SHI's exhibits


Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Sealaska shareholder, descendant of a shareholder, or spouse of a shareholder
  • At least 18 years of age by start date
  • Must be currently enrolled in college or a vocational-technical school or a recent graduate (1-2 years) and have completed one year of school by the start date
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Coursework in archival/library science, museum studies, anthropology, archaeology, indigenous studies, human geography, cultural tourism, or other related topics
  • At least a 2.5 GPA
  • Strong critical thinking and research skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to both collaborate with a team and work independently
  • Self-starter with ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to travel, as needed
