Job Details

Florida Atlantic University. The Department of Anthropology invites applications for a tenure earning Assistant Professor position in biocultural or medical anthropology for the 2022-2023 academic year.

This position is part of a cluster of new hires whose research interests are broadly or thematically related to issues of Crisis, Resistance, Sustainability, and Resilience.  Issues such as climate change, inequality, new technological systems, ethno-nationalism, and political-economic competition, among other dynamics, drive the predominant global challenges.

We are searching for scholars whose work addresses the “human side” of these challenges:

-on human adaptations to crises and catastrophes (from hurricanes, to increasing global temperatures and sea level rise, to war, conquest, and political struggle) and/or

-on human adaptations that move towards (or provide evidence for) sustainable lifeways (e.g., eco villages, new technologies) and resilient communities.

Geographic area and specialization are open, but research that addresses issues of human biological adaptations to stresses, especially heat/humidity, global public health, anthropological epidemiology, aging, demography, or related dimensions is preferred.  In addition, applications reflecting expertise in new research techniques and technologies will receive special consideration. A successful candidate will be committed to undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring, demonstrate research potential, and have an active, field-based presence.

The teaching load is 5 courses (3/2) during the academic year. The candidate should be prepared to teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels associated with their specialization and geographic region..

Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Anthropology from an accredited institution. The successful candidate must have the Ph.D. completed by the start of the Fall 2022 semester.

The Department of Anthropology embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will participate in a climate that attracts students of all ethnicities, races, nationalities, genders, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. In a continuing effort to enrich its academic environment and provide equal educational and employment opportunities, the department actively encourages applications from members of underrepresented groups in higher education. Of special interest are candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and possess a strong commitment to improving access to higher education for historically marginalized peoples.

Applications must be submitted online at jobs.fau.edu (posting no. 11631) and include an application letter addressing research and teaching interests, CV, and complete contact information for three references.  For questions about the position, direct correspondence to Dr. Kate Detwiler, kdetwile@fau.edu.  Application deadline: January 7, 2022.

FAU is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veterans’ status or any other characteristic protected by law. Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodation, please call 561-297-6057, TTY/TDD 711.

A background check will be required for the candidate selected for this position.

All applicants must complete an Employment Application available online through FAU’s Career Site: www.fau.edu/jobs and apply for the currently posted position.

If selected as among the group of finalists, an unofficial copy of the transcript, scanned into an electronic format, will be requested. Degrees from outside the United States must be validated by an organization belonging to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Service (NACES), with an indication of the documents the evaluation was prepared from (official transcripts, diplomas, dissertation abstracts). The evaluation should be scanned and electronically sent to the search committee chair.
