Job Details

The faculty of the Department of Anthropology at the University of South Carolina (UofSC), in Columbia, seek an anthropological archaeologist for a tenure-track assistant professorship beginning August 16, 2022 with a focus on the African Diaspora in the Americas or Atlantic Africa. Scholars whose research, teaching and service interests intersect with (post)colonialism, slavery, post-emancipation studies, race, or modernity/modern life are especially encouraged to apply, though the position is open regarding methodological expertise. Ideal candidates will also have the ability to contribute to our ongoing research and service addressing anti-racism and diversity/inclusion matters. Faculty members are expected to maintain an active program of research that demonstrates success in publishing and securing extramural funding.  Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in Anthropology by the time of the appointment.

The Department of Anthropology is highly committed to both undergraduate and graduate instruction and mentoring, offering programs leading to bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. degrees. For more information about the Department, please visit http://artsandsciences.sc.edu/anth. The program provides all students grounding in four-field anthropology and is committed to social justice. A scholar skilled in the culture, history, and theory of African descendants could assist local scholars, students, and historical site stewards in preserving heritage in a state with one of the largest African American populations.

All applicants must fill out an online application through the University’s online employment system at https://uscjobs.sc.edu/postings/106976. Candidates must upload a CV, a cover letter describing research, teaching, and service interests, a writing sample, and the names and contact information for three references.

Complete applications must be received no later than December 15th, 2021.  Interested applicants can send questions or correspondence to the search committee chair, Dr. Terrance Weik, via email, at weik@mailbox.sc.edu .
