*History of the Program:*
Drew's Business Studies Program grew out of the interests of students, faculty, administrators, and trustees to create a rigorous business program that truly reflects the liberal arts tradition. Starting in 1996 with the Wall Street Semester course in New York City, the Economics Department subsequently created a minor in Business, Society, and Culture intended to be a business minor attractive to students in the humanities. This later evolved into a Business major integrating courses from more than a dozen departments and disciplines including not only the social and physical sciences but also the arts and humanities, producing majors well-rounded in not only basic principles of business but also the influence of culture, globalization, institutions, social behavior, language, and politics on markets and economic activity. In 2020, the success of the Business major led to the expansion of similarly inspired majors in Marketing as well as in Accounting and Finance. The Marketing major offers a critically informed program of study located at the intersection of business and the social sciences. The major exposes students to foundational concepts and contemporary approaches in the field while helping students cultivate a strong sense of social responsibility and professional ethics in a way that reflects Drew University's commitment to a liberal arts education.
