Our mission is to study and protect archeological sites in Arkansas, to preserve and manage information and collections from those sites, and to communicate what we learn to the people of Arkansas. Summary of Job Duties:
The Arkansas Archeological Survey (AAS) invites applications for a permanent, full-time position as Director to begin July 1, 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is based at the AAS Coordinating Office (2475 N Hatch Ave., Fayetteville AR 72703), located on the University of Arkansas agricultural complex just north of the main campus.
Established by the Arkansas General Assembly in 1967, the AAS operates a statewide program of archeological research, public service including preservation of records and collections for archeological sites and projects, and educational outreach through the Coordinating Office and ten research stations. The Director is expected to provide leadership to AAS archeologists in the pursuit of archeological research, public education, and the preservation of Arkansas's archeological heritage. The duties include preparation and oversight of budgets, grants and contracts, organizational planning, staff supervision, development of partnerships with universities and state agencies, fund raising, and consultation with descendant communities. The Director will facilitate research and publication opportunities and work closely with the Department of Anthropology and the Environmental Dynamics Program at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. The Director will have a Research Faculty title in the Department of Anthropology with an opportunity for teaching and directing graduate research.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD in anthropology, archeology, or a closely related field
- Archeological experience in North America as demonstrated by a strong record of research, publication, and grant support
- Experience managing a diverse organization devoted to archeological research, preservation, and education
- Thorough understanding of state and federal legislation regulating archeological research and preservation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Specialization in the archeology of Arkansas and the Southeast
- Experience in public archeology, public outreach and education, and working with avocational archeologists and local, state, and federal agency officials.
- Experience working with Native American tribes and nations and other descendant communities.
- Skill in advocacy for archeology and historic preservation
- Acquaintance with or experience using Workday enterprise resource planning software
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
- Knowledge of Southeastern and Arkansas archeology, and state and federal legislation pertinent to archeology and historic preservation.
- Skill in managing archeological research within public archeology frameworks.
- Ability to communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders and work collaboratively with staff and members of partner organizations.
