The Peer Specialist is willing to use and share his or her personal, practical experience and first-hand knowledge to the team and its clients. The Peer Specialist functions as a fully integrated team member providing expertise about the recovery process, symptom management, and the persistence required by clients to have a satisfying life.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides peer counseling and support, drawing on common experiences as a peer, to provide guidance and encouragement to clients to take responsibility and actively participate in their own recovery.
  • Provides side-by-side support and coaching to help clients socialize (e.g., going with a client to the movies, grocery store, library, etc.) during program hours of operation.
  • Supports client participation in community self-help groups.
  • Assists clients to plan and carry out leisure time activities on evening, weekends, and holidays.
  • Coaches or teaches basic individual living skills, such as food preparation and meal planning, laundry, bill payment, personal hygiene, etc.
  • Transports clients to scheduled community activities or appointments.
  • Provides education about symptoms of mental illness to enable clients to identify their relapse symptoms or relapse triggers.
  • Under the direction of the physician and nursing staff, works with clients to support individual choice and preference regarding medications.
  • Maintains productivity standards as established regarding % of time spent in direct client contact.
  • Documents each contact with a client in case note according to program standards.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Must have ability to sit for 2 total hours per day, and up to 1 total consecutive hour. Must be able to stand for 8 total hours per day and up to 2 total consecutive hours. Must be able to walk 6 total hours per day and up to 10 total consecutive minutes. Must have the ability to frequently use fingers/hands for fingering and handling. Must have the ability to use upper extremities for frequent pushing of objects up to 10 pounds and occasional pushing of objects up to 75 lbs. Must have the ability to transport patients weighing up to 250 lbs. via wheelchair, stretcher and/or bed. Must have the ability for frequent stooping and bending. Must have the ability for frequent reaching above shoulder level. Must have the ability for touching as it relates to feeling objects by touching with the skin, particularly that of fingertips. Must have the ability for hearing as it relates to normal conversation, high frequency and low frequency hearing sounds. Must have the ability for seeing as it relates to general vision, near vision, color vision and peripheral vision.

EDUCATION:

High School Diploma or equivalent required. An Associate's Degree or Bachelor's degree with major course work in sociology, social work, psychology, gerontology, anthropology, political science, criminal justice, theology, nursing, counseling or education is preferred.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Must be a current or former recipient of mental health services. Must understand the principles of mental illness and recovery. Certification as Peer Specialist required.
