The Department of Anthropology at Rice University invites applications for a two-year post-doctoral position in sociocultural anthropology to begin July 1, 2022. The post-doctoral fellow will teach two courses per academic year. The fellowship offers a stipend of $52,000 per year. Geographical area of specialization is open. Candidates whose work intersects with science and technology studies are welcome. Thematic interests might include but are not limited to: visual anthropology, feminist and queer anthropology, critical native and indigenous studies, multimodal methods, political and legal anthropology. In tandem with our department's strengths, the fellow would hold a track record of methodological innovation.

Candidates must currently have a Ph.D. or complete the Ph.D. by July 1, 2022.  Candidates should submit (a) a cover letter that presents the candidate’s research, teaching trajectory and future plans, (b) a CV, (c) two writing samples, and (d) the names and contact information of three references.  Reference letters will be requested from candidates on the long list only. Essential Functions:

  • Provides research relating to sociocultural anthropology
  • Documents, analyzes, and maintains research data
  • Pursues proposal development to obtain research funding
  • Publishes and presents research findings
  • Adapts new procedures or methods relative to research procedures
  • Provides academic services (ie. teaching classes) to the department as required
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Skills Required:

  • Familiarity with academic publication and expertise in field of study
  • Ability to identify possible grant opportunities and draft proposals
  • Experience in teaching both undergraduate and graduate students
  • Ability to create opportunities and space for interacting with grads, undergrads and other faculty
