The Department of American Studies at the University of Virginia invites applications for a position in Asian American and/or Pacific Islander (AAPI) Studies, at the Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure-track). Anticipated start date is August 25, 2022, and the teaching load is 2 classes per semester. Applicants must have a record of interdisciplinary research and/or teaching in AAPI Studies. We are particularly interested in candidates who work at the intersection of AAPI Studies and other ethnic studies (Latinx, African American, Native and Indigenous, and Arab and Muslim American Studies), or who focus on Southeast Asian Americans (Vietnamese, Lao, Khmer, Hmong, Pinxy, Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian, or Singaporean Americans), or whose work is deeply engaged with spaces outside of the U.S., in Asia, Latin America, or Africa. Applicants at the assistant professor rank should hold a PhD at the time of appointment. Applicants at the Associate Professor rank must hold a PhD at the time of application and have a strong publication and teaching record.
The Department of American Studies at the University of Virginia is comprised of core faculty whose work engages methodologies that range across the humanities and social sciences, and many faculty have joint-appointments in English, History, Religious Studies, Media Studies, Anthropology, African American Studies, and Politics. One of the department's major undertakings in recent years has been the creation of the Americas Center, a joint endeavor with Latin American Studies. Other initiatives at UVA to reimagine area studies through categories of comparative racialization and the Global South have also invigorated our ethnic studies curricula and research. Our department hosts interdisciplinary minors in Asian Pacific American Studies, Latinx Studies, Native and Indigenous Studies, and Southern Studies. A new colleague may be interested in an approach that extends beyond the limits of one or another discipline within the interdisciplinary scope of AAPI Studies.
Application review will begin November 8, 2021 and the position will remain open until filled. The appointment begins with the fall 2022 semester.
