Assistant or Associate Professor of Archaeology and Inequality

The Department of Anthropology at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, (https://anth.la.psu.edu/) invites applications for a tenure-line position in archaeology starting Fall Semester 2022. We aim to hire at the early career level (Assistant or Associate Professor).

We seek an outstanding archaeologist whose interests and skills are consistent with the Anthropology Department's integrative, scientific, and quantitative approach to studying human diversity, and its long traditions of sociopolitical, population, ecological, and evolutionary research in archaeology and beyond. Specifically, we are interested in recruiting an archaeologist whose work addresses the emergence, intensification, preservation, and/or consequences of inequality. Given the rapid rise of levels of inequality on a global scale in the last few decades and the important consequences of these differences for human wellbeing, Penn State Anthropology is interested in hiring a scholar whose work is interdisciplinary and/or integrates across anthropology's subfields to investigate inequality through time.

The Department of Anthropology is especially interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community at Penn State. Methodological and geographical areas of expertise are open. We encourage applicants whose work can contribute toward collaborative scholarship within the department and across the university on initiatives focused on inequality, sustainability and human-environmental systems, and human health. A PhD is required at time of appointment. In addition, successful candidates must either have demonstrated a commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community, or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so, given the opportunity.

Candidates for Associate Professor must demonstrate effective teaching at university levels, an ability to obtain external funding, a strong record of academic outputs, and an innovative and integrative research program with a commitment to community engagement. Duties will involve a combination of teaching and research, based on the candidate's qualifications. Candidates for Assistant Professor must demonstrate potential for effective teaching at university levels, an ability to obtain external funding, a record of academic outputs, and an innovative and integrative research program with a commitment to community engagement. Duties will involve a combination of teaching and research, based on the candidate's qualifications.

Candidates may wish to consider how they might integrate with one or more of Penn State's interdisciplinary programs including the Institutes of Energy and the Environment [http://www.iee.psu.edu/], Energy and Environmental Sustainability Laboratories [https://eesl.iee.psu.edu], Materials Research Institute [https://www.mri.psu.edu], Africana Research Center [https://arc.la.psu.edu], African Studies Program [https://africanstudies.la.psu.edu], Sustainability Institute [https://sustainability.psu.edu], Human Dimensions of Natural Resources and the Environment [https://http://www.agsci.psu.edu/hdnre], Intercollege Graduate Degree Program in Ecology [https://www.huck.psu.edu/graduate-programs/ecology], Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences [http://www.huck.psu.edu/], Population Research Institute [http://www.pop.psu.edu/], and Graduate Program in Demography [http://www.pop.psu.edu/demography].

Applicants can apply at https://hr.psu.edu/careers and should include: 1) a cover letter; 2) a curriculum vitae detailing the candidate's educational background, employment history, grants, and publications; 3) a statement summarizing the candidate's research and teaching experience and interests, as well as how they relate to a commitment to diversity and inclusion; and 4) the names, addresses, and emails of three references. Review of applications will begin October 27, 2021.
